Overview

Join Goofy and his son, Max, in a hip and hilarious all-new movie that kicks up outrageous fun on the road to higher education. It’s all extreme sports and a life of freedom as Max sets off for college — but Goofy misses Max so much he literally falls down on the job. The laughs come fast and furious as he shows up, leisure suit and all, to finish college alongside Max and his friends. When Goofy meets the librarian, they hit if off and spark a stuck-in-the-seventies disco inferno that steals the show. But as Goofy tries to get closer to Max, both must go to the extreme to learn how to live their own lives … together! From inspired high-energy music to the antics of one of Disney’s most beloved dads, AN EXTREMELY GOOFY MOVIE proves that two Goofs are better than one!Goofy’s second feature opens with the big dog wistfully sending his teenage son Max off to his freshman year of college. In short order, daydreaming Dad is fired and learns he’s not employable without finishing his degree at–you guessed it–the same university his beloved “Maxie” attends. Soon the eager father is embarrassing the heck out of his son and curbing his independence. At the same time, Max and his skateboarding buddies form an extreme sports team, challenging the snooty fraternity team captained by Bradley Uppercrust III, who doesn’t grasp the concept of fair play. When things get rough, Goofy saves the day–and finds true love with a librarian who shares his ’70s-era nostalgia. Any excuse to put Goofy in an afro wig and “Knock on Wood” and “Shake Your Groove Thing” on the soundtrack! The 73-minute story is serviceable and the moral commendable (integrity wins in the end). Ages 3 and up will enjoy the antics, but a lot of the (harmless) college jokes are aimed at adults. –Kimberly Heinrichs

What made the original Toy Story so great, besides its significant achievement as the first-ever feature-length computer animated film, was its ability to instantly transport viewers into a magical world where it seemed completely plausible that toys were living, thinking beings who sprang to life the minute they were alone and wanted nothing more than to be loved and played with by their children. Toy Story 3 absolutely succeeds in the very same thing–adults and children alike, whether they’ve seen the original film or not, find themselves immediately immersed in a world in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Ham (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), the aliens, and the rest of Andy’s toys remain completely devoted to Andy (John Morris) even as he’s getting ready to pack up and leave for college. Woody scoffs at the other toys’ worries that they’ll end up in the garbage, assuring them that they’ve earned a spot of honor in the attic, but when the toys are mistakenly donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody is the only toy whose devotion to Andy outweighs the promise of getting played with each and every day. Woody sets off toward home alone while the other toys settle in for some daycare fun, but things don’t turn out quite as expected at the daycare thanks to the scheming, strawberry-scented old-timer bear Lots-o’-Huggin’ (Ned Beatty). Eventually, Woody rejoins his friends and they all attempt a daring escape from the daycare, which could destroy them all. The pacing of the film is impeccable at this point, although the sense of peril may prove almost too intense for a few young viewers. Pixar’s 3-D computer animation is top-notch as always and the voice talent in this film is tremendous, but in the end, it’s Pixar’s uncanny ability to combine drama, action, and humor in a way that irresistibly draws viewers into the world of the film that makes Toy Story 3 such great family entertainment. Theatrical Trailer

Fans of Cartoon Network’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force series (part of the cable channel’s Adult Swim programming) know what they’re in for with this feature-length extension of the nearly-indescribable animated show. Set in a rundown, Jersey suburb, Aqua Teen concerns the misadventures of three human-size characters who happen to be fast food refuse: the crude Master Shake, a discarded milkshake in a cup similar to those from McDonalds; skeptical Frylock, a flying, cardboard box of french fries; and the personable Meatwad, a piece of expired, red beef of unknown origin. Together, they go in search of a missing piece of an exercise machine that happens to be more than an exercise machine, placing them on a collision course with the likes of Oglethorpe and Emory, a pair of jagged, ridiculous creatures from the future who travel with a robot companion claiming to be the Ghost of Christmas Past. They also encounter Dr. Weird, a mad scientist given to disguises and who seeks revenge against the Hunger Force; McPee Pants, a rapping spider who wears a shower cap and diaper; and the hilarious Ignignokt and Err, two-dimensional villains from the ancient days of pokey, Atari video games. Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro, series creators and writers-directors on Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, are wildly entertaining class clowns, but they expect the rest of us to follow them into their surreal world of postmodern animated nuttiness. The rewards, however, are plentiful. –Tom Keogh

Trinity & Beyond… The Atomic Bomb Movieis the top secret, strange and visually compelling history of the design, production and testing of Atomic Hydrogen bombs.

In this special 60th Anniversary Diamond Edition, renowned special effects filmmaker Peter Kuran (Star Wars, Star Trek II & V, Robocop) offers up amazing film footage chronicling the top secret, strange and visually compelling history of the design, production and testing of Atomic Hydrogen bombs by the United States. With the development and use of award-winning new film restoration systems, Kuran has perfectly preserved these haunting images for generations to come.

Narrated by William Shatner (Boston Legal, Star Trek), Trinity & Beyond features extremely rare film segments from top secret government archives and startling footage of nuclear bomb tests conducted by Great Britain and China, plus the largest atomic explosion ever created by Russia, and de-classified U.S. footage released to the public as recent as May, 2006. Whether being exploded under the ocean, suspended by a balloon, shot from a cannon or even detonated in space, these weapons are capable of devastating destruction – the quality of these images is as startling as are remarkable.

With new footage shot with hi-definition cameras, this award-winning production also features an amazing explosion segment that must be seen with 3D glasses to truly take in its full impact. Trinity & Beyond features an original score performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and an interview with Dr. Edward Teller a developer of nuclear weapons and one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century.

Trinity & Beyond is an extraordinary production that provides an important understanding of events and the creations of technologies that have changed the world forever.

Special Features: – Atomic Bomb 3-D Bonus Section – Live-Action Bomb Explosion with Actual Sound Delay – Mind-Blowing Photo Slide Show – Reference Chart of All The Nuclear Detonations by the U.S. Including YieldsIn the salad days of nuclear-weapons testing, the United States detonated 331 atomic, hydrogen, and thermonuclear bombs. Many of those explosions appear in Trinity and Beyond, which utilizes a lot of declassified footage, most of it in color. Standouts include the United States’ South Pacific detonation of an atom bomb 90 feet below the water to study the effects on a fleet of ships. Surprise, surprise, they sink! If that wasn’t enough, the navy also loaded the decks with sheep to study the effects of the blast on life forms. Surprise, surprise, they die! Glowing leg of lamb anyone? This film will alternately amuse and horrify you at the rampant irresponsibility of the Soviets and Americans in their quest for nuclear domination. The Russians have the honor of having detonated the largest nuclear bomb ever at a whopping 58 megatons. The Hiroshima bomb was barely a kiloton. Of course, after the U.S. and Russia ceased their activities, the Chinese decided to get in on the act. But that’s a different story for a different documentary. –Kristian St. Clair

Are You Being Served?: The Movie

Overview

ARE YOU BEING SERVED – DVD MovieWriters Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft managed something quite clever with this, the film version of the 1970s sitcom Are You Being Served? The idea of this cheery collection of comedy stereotypes–the pompous one, the vulgar one, the camp one, the shifty one, and so on–being confined within a department store was a master stroke, as it allowed any kind of situation to arise without the plot having to exceed the restrictions imposed by the set. How, then, to keep the same theme for the big screen without just offering the television series writ large? Simple: send the whole cast on holiday together but make sure they can’t leave their hotel, a state of affairs contrived easily enough by throwing a guerilla uprising into the plot. So it is, then, that the staff of Grace Bros. descends on the Costa Plonka while the store is closed for refurbishment. There are all the usual jokes involving knickers, boobs, toilets, and gay sex (sometimes all at once), adding up to a good slice of nostalgic fun for anyone who was there when lapels really were that wide. –Roger Thomas

At the Picture Show: Small-Town Audiences and the Creation of Movie Fan Culture

List Price: $ 22.50

Price: $ 22.50

Feature

Overview

The motion picture industry in its earliest days seemed as ephemeral as the flickering images it produced. Considered an amusement fad even by their exhibitors, movies nevertheless spread quickly from big-city vaudeville houses to towns and rural communities across the nation. Small-town audiences, looking for more than the lurid melodramas and slapstick comedies popular in cities, often lined up to see films with conservative and educational themes: scenic panoramas, biblical tableaux, newsreels, and manufacturing scenes.

In this social history of the cinema during the silent-film era, Kathryn H. Fuller charts the gradual homogenization of a diverse American movie audience as itinerant shows gave way first to nickelodeon theaters and then to more luxurious picture palaces.

Fuller suggests that fan magazines helped to reduce the distinctions between rural and urban moviegoers and created a nationwide popular culture of film consumption. Analyzing the articles, advertisements, and letters in such publications as Motion Picture Story Magazine and Photoplay, Fuller shows that these fan magazines–which initially catered to adult readers–shifted their focus by the late 1910s to young women who, entranced by Hollywood glamour, eagerly bought products endorsed by the stars.

Although the transformation of the movies into big-time entertainment had multiple sources, Fuller argues that ultimately the maturation of the film industry depended on the support of both urban and rural middle-class audiences. Providing the fullest portrait to date of the small-town audience’s changing habits and desires, At the Picture Show demonstrates for the first time how a fan culture emerged in the United States, and enriches our understanding of mass media’s relationship to early twentieth-century American society.

  • DISNEY’S A CHRISTMAS CAROL (DVD MOVIE)

Overview

From Walt Disney Pictures comes the magical retelling of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale — Disney’s A Christmas Carol, the high-flying, heartwarming adventure for the whole family, starring Jim Carrey. When three ghosts take penny-pinching Scrooge on an eye-opening journey, he discovers the true meaning of Christmas — but he must act on it before it’s too late. Complete with spirited bonus features, this exhilarating and touching Disney classic is destined to be part of your holiday tradition, adding sparkle and heart to all your Christmases yet to come.Fans of Robert Zemeckis’s brilliant special effects, and of Jim Carrey’s transformative acting abilities, will be swept away by their collaboration in the stunning A Christmas Carol. Perhaps more surprising is that Charles Dickens purists will also be impressed and captivated by this version of the oft-told tale–which is dark, complex, and in its way, uncompromising. Which is all to say that this Christmas Carol is an instant holiday classic, easily taking its place alongside the Alistair Sim version, the Patrick Stewart version, and even the Mr. Magoo version of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his ultimate holiday redemption. Carrey is dazzling as not only Scrooge, the most miserable, and miserly, man in 19th-century England, but as the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. As with The Polar Express, Zemeckis animates the film over the actors’ physical performances onscreen, but here, the emotion is intact–even heightened by the spiffy effects. Joining Carrey in the cast are terrific players, including Gary Oldman (Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the ghost of Marley), Cary Elwes, Bob Hoskins, and Robin Wright Penn. But the heart of the film is Carrey, whose dramatic acting has shone in films like The Truman Show and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. The emotional connection Carrey makes with his characters is what brings Dickens’s classic alive–and what connects the viewer with the true spirit of the holidays. “God bless us, every one.” –A.T. Film blurs the line between myth and reality better than any other artistic medium, one could argue. Using movies to explore the unconscious realms of society in order to reach a better understanding of what drives it, this book examines filmmakers and films that center on schizophrenic themes of alienation, paranoia, breakdown, fantasy, dreams, dementia and violence, and that address–as entertainment–the schizophrenic experience. The loss of individual identity as reflected in the films is investigated, as well as the shamanic potential inherent in the broader theme.
